SeriaLynx
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What
is a Serial Data Device?
A. There are four broad groups of Serial Data Devices:
- Handheld
Computers, like Palm, Visor and Windows CE units.
- Data-collection
devices, like barcode scanners and RF tag readers.
- Data-display
devices, like indicator boards.
- Computer
controlled devices or machinery.
Q. What
is SeriaLynx?
A. SeriaLynx is an 802.11 Wireless Adaptor for Palm, Windows CE
and RS-232 RS-422 and RS-485 Serial Devices: a communication device which
provides an interface between Serial Data communication devices and IEEE
802.3 Ethernet networks. SeriaLynx can also utilize its on-board wireless
capability to add wireless networking capability that complies with IEEE
802.11 specifications. SeriaLynx devices can operate in four different
modes:
- Using
RJ45 10baseT cabling to connect a Serial Data Device to wired devices on a LAN (Local Area Network).
- Wireless
in an ad hoc mode enabling direct communication between two Serial
Data Devices each connected to an individual SeriaLynx unit.
- Wireless
with a access point functioning as a bridge between a serial data
device and a server on a LAN, or with full peer-to-peer access on a
LAN.
- Wireless
with a access point functioning as a gateway to a stand-alone WLAN
(Wireless Local Area Network) that permits full peer-to-peer
communication between the other devices on the 802.11 network.

Q. Why
does a SeriaLynx Unit have two DB9 COM ports?
A. Although each SeriaLynx unit has its own configurable IP address,
the unit can accept two different port numbers so that each unit can
be connected to two Serial Data Devices. The IP address and the port
number are easily configured using the simple setup utility.
Q. How do
I configure a SeriaLynx Unit?
A. There are three different ways of configuring a SeriaLynx unit:
- You can
use the supplied Null Modem cable to connect your SeriaLynx unit
directly to a Windows 95/98/ME/NT computer. Then it is a simple matter
of entering the required information.
- You can
connect the SeriaLynx unit to your Local Area Network, or even from a
device connected to the Internet and use a Web browser like Internet
Explorer or Netscape to configure the settings.
- You can
TELNET to the SeriaLynx unit either from your LAN or, if connected,
even from a device connected to the Internet.
Q. What
is the range of the Wireless connectivity?
A. This is dependant on local conditions and the capabilities of the
access point - antenna, power output, etc.; however, with a suitable
access point and optimum terrain, SeriaLynx will operate up 1000ft or
further.
Q. What
is the IEEE 802.11b standard for Wireless LAN (WLAN)?
A. The IEEE 802.11b standard for Wireless LAN, also known as Wireless
Ethernet, is a technical specification written for wireless network
technology that uses 2.4 GHz radio frequency (RF) to transmit data. It
allows users to access information at home, in the workplace or on campus
without wires. The technology is most often used to extend the coverage of
a wired LAN, but it can also be used in place of wired networks. The
installation of access points (radio transceivers) provides wireless
coverage across a local area. Client adapters and access points
communicate to transmit data without wires within a WLAN. A Wireless LAN
can also exist in a peer-to-peer setting, between devices that have WLAN
access modules. SeriaLynx supports peer-to-peer networking among other
Wireless Ethernet devices. Adherence to the 802.11b standard increases
compatibility among WLAN products.
Q.
With which access points will a SeriaLynx work?
A. The SeriaLynx Wireless Ethernet module will work with all brands of
802.11b access points that are Wi-Fi compatible.
Q. What
is the estimated battery life of the SeriaLynx unit.
A. SeriaLynx comes equipped with a rechargeable NiMh battery that will
run for approximately four hours of continuous wireless use.
Q. What
is the warranty for SeriaLynx units?
A. All
SeriaLynx units carry a one-year limited hardware and software warranty.
